UPenn Natural Horse Behavior Short Course

The two-day course, led by the world-renowned Dr. Sue McDonnell, PhD in Equine Behavior, was held at the picturesque Lor-El Farm in Clark Summit, Pennsylvania. This immersive experience was open to both students and the public, drawing participants eager to expand their knowledge of horse behavior in a natural setting. Hosted by Jamie Miller, the owner of Lor-El Farm, the course offered a rare glimpse into the lives of a semi-feral herd of about 60 ponies roaming freely on 30 acres of land. Participants were captivated by the sight of these ponies thriving in their natural environment, including the oldest pony in the herd, a 24-year-old mare who had just given birth to a healthy foal without any assistance. The course provided an extraordinary opportunity to observe and understand equine behavior firsthand. Dr. McDonnell's expertise, combined with Jamie's intimate knowledge of the herd, made for an enlightening experience that left participants with a deeper appreciation for these magnificent animals. The highlight of the weekend was walking into the field on the second day to discover a newborn foal, a truly magical moment that underscored the beauty and resilience of these creatures. At the conclusion of the course, participants received a certificate of completion from UPenn, marking a rewarding achievement in their ongoing education. Middleburg Getaway at Salamander Resort

During their stay, they were guests at the beautiful Salamander Resort & Spa, where they took the opportunity to explore the resort’s equestrian facilities. While visiting the stables, Amy and Stacy had the pleasure of meeting Ashley Farrell, the manager of the resort’s equestrian program. Saving The Henry Family Farm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CRANBURY, NJ June 28, 2025 Stacy Butewicz with a town resident's sign Cranbury Community Rallies to Save Historic 21-Acre Farm from Eminent Domain Cranbury, NJ — The historic 21-acre farm located at 1234 South River Road, owned by the Henry family for 175 years, is at the center of a passionate community effort to prevent its seizure by eminent domain. On May 12th, the Cranbury Township Committee voted unanimously to move forward with the eminent domain process, prompting an outpouring of support from residents and local advocates. Brothers Andy & Chris received a letter in the mail one day of the township's plans to seize the property if they did not agree to sell for Affordable Housing. The Henry family has turned down offers over $30,000,000. The property is not in preservation because the Henry family never intended to sell it. Stacy Butewicz, a well-known advocate for farmland preservation who championed for Gaitway Farm in Manalapan with her partner, Amy Butewicz, was introduced to the issue by Former Mayor, Jay Taylor. Stacy attended the township meeting and spoke passionately in defense of the Henry Family Farm. The farm, known for its beloved Oreo cows and sheep, has become a symbol of the town's rich agricultural heritage.The farm fed the town long before commercial grocery stores existed. The movement to save the farm quickly gained momentum, evolving from a grassroots effort into a widespread campaign. The Cranbury Historical Society organized creative fundraising initiatives, including selling stuffed animal cows, and a GoFundMe campaign exceeded six figures in donations. The cause attracted notable supporters, including former New Jersey gubernatorial candidate and radio host Bill Spadea, who visited the farm twice to lend his support.The campaign has also received bipartisan political backing. Assemblyman Alex Sauickie introduced legislation aimed at protecting active farms from being seized, while U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and New Jersey District Attorney Alina Habba have also been engaged, calling on the township to reconsider its plans. Stacy and Amy Butewicz, have dedicated their careers to promoting and protecting sustainable and responsible land use. As the community unites to save the Henry family farm, the fight to preserve New Jersey’s agricultural legacy continues. The award was presented to Dr. Butewicz during the Rutgers Equine Science Center's 2024 "Evening of Science & Celebration,” sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center. From an early age, Dr. Butewicz participated in the 4-H horse program on the local, state, and national levels garnering many accomplishments. Because of this, she was crowned the 2001 NJ State Equestrian of the Year for her strong leadership in the equine community. In 2008, Dr. Butewicz graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Rutgers University Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy with a Doctorate Degree (PharmD) in Pharmacy, and was a member of Rho Chi, the national pharmacy honor society. Even though she continues to hold an active pharmacist license in the states of New Jersey and Kentucky; her deep connection to horses, agriculture, and open space in New Jersey led her to obtain her real estate license in 2015. She currently works as a full time Realtor for Keller Williams Princeton Real Estate, specializing in equestrian properties, farms and land across the entire state. Dr. Butewicz, and her sister Stacy, operate their real estate team under the Butewicz Equestrian Lifestyle Real Estate banner. To date, Butewicz Lifestyle Real Estate has proudly represented both buyers and sellers in over 135 farm sales totaling just over $100 million in sales volume. Always giving back her time and efforts to organizations and charities, her volunteerism philanthropy, and leadership have been a tremendous focus for Dr. Butewicz. She is currently a Chair Emeritus for the Rutgers University Board for Equine Advancement, the advisory group to the Rutgers Equine Science Center, and had previously served as Co-Chair of the Board. A champion for open space and agriculture initiatives, she serves as a council member for Millstone Township (Monmouth County) on 2 separate councils: the Open Space Preservation Council and the Agricultural Advisory Council, serving currently as Chairperson. To foster the growth of future leaders, Dr. Butewicz created the NJ Agricultural Achievement Award Scholarship which is awarded annually. An avid harness racing fan, Amy currently owns racehorses as a sole owner as well as in partnerships. Her interest in harness racing grew with importing her first Australian racehorse, beloved pacing mare Corsini A.
